Earlier this week, we took a look back at the top 10 best TV shows of 2016. Now it's time to turn our attention forward to 2017. While we're all excited for the return of our favorite shows, there are a handful of new series debuting next year that may be worth checking out.
Note: This isn't a ranking of shows you should be most excited about. It's just a collection of new series that have potential.
Star (FOX)
Yes, I realize that Star already debuted this week (to a solid 6.73 millionviewers), but the remaining episodes will all be airing in 2017, so cut me some slack?
Musical-based series can be hit (see: Glee) or miss (see: Smash), but Fox is banking on the latter thanks to their past success. Academy Award nominated director Lee Daniels helped develop the network's uber hit Empire and now all involved are hoping lighting can strike twice. Empire averaged a robust 11.4 million weekly live viewers in its second season. With Daniels directing Star's pilot and executive producing, can lightening strike twice?
One Day at a Time (Netflix)
Based on the 1975 series of the same name from TV giant Norman Lear, One Day at a Time has a lot going for it. The show has a built-in fan base (albeit not necessarily in Netflix's target demographic), it co-stars Oscar and Emmy winner Rita Moreno and it boasts a good story to be told.
Though a sitcom in name, One Day at a Time may show off a bit more heart as it revolves around a Cuban-American family, whose newly single military mom tries to balance raising difficult children with having her own personal life. You can practically hear the "Awww" of a studio audience already.
Outside of Fuller House and The Ranch, Netflix is still finding its way in the sitcom genre. If One Day at a Time can deliver, the streaming service will have yet another reliable four-quadrant offering. As broadcast networks know all too well, sitcoms can be great long-term and low-risk money makers.
Taboo (FX)
Full disclosure: Taboo looks like a very strange series, but the talent behind it has me intrigued. Created by Steven Knight (Eastern Promises), Tom Hardy and his father Chips Hardy, Taboo will follow a long-lost adventurer (T. Hardy) who returns to Britain from Africa with stolen diamonds in order to avenge his father's death.
FX is on an absolute creative roll right now and things will only get better with Fargo's return next year (along with the next entry on this list). Though Taboo looks too out-there to be a true mainstream success, the eight-episode miniseries is the perfect type of high-minded talent-based risk to take when you're playing with house money.
FX would likely be pleased if Taboo generated good critical response even if it only put up modest ratings (2 million or so).
Legion (FX)
Hey, remember when I mentioned Fargo AKA the best show on television right now? Well, creator and showrunner Noah Hawley also developed the X-Men based series Legion. Is that enough to pique your interest or shall I go on?
Legion will center around David Haller (Dan Stevens), who suffers from extreme schizophrenia and split personalities...or so he thinks. After a strange encounter with a new face, David begins to think that maybe the voices he hears and the visions he sees are real.
The CW's Supergirl (2.6 million), ABC's Agents of SHIELD (2.3 million) and FOX's Gotham (4 million) have all proven to be relatively steady performers for their respective networks. Legion promises to be a very different type of superhero show, which is good considering how much cookie-cutter content is produced in the genre these days. But will it be able to garner enough viewers to support a long lifespan?
